Kicks Fighters cornered by Chris Kent and Jim Caldecourt attended an International Thai and Kickboxing Championship Show at Ignite Night – Club Jarman Park Hemel Hempstead on Sunday 21 st October.
Rob Pullen (Kicks) was due to fight Daniel Heden from Shaolin Tigers but both trainer and opponent failed to turn up to the event.
Paul Edwards(Kicks) had a very close three round Leg Kick Fight against home boy Benjamin Willis (Hemel Thai). In the first two rounds Edwards comfortably picked off his opponent at will with accurate punching and kicking. In the third round with thirty seconds to go Edwards was caught with a high kick which gave him an eight count. Edwards shook this off, and continued fighting as accurately as before, but this seemed to be enough for the judges to award the decision to the home boy Benjamin Willis on a split decision.
Tiffany Williams (Kicks) had a strange three round Full Contact Kickboxing Bout Re – Match with Virginia Junin from Italy . The Italian fighter weighed in outside the specified weight category and then spent three rounds leg kicking the Brighton fighter with no warning or points taken off whilst complaining to the referee on every possible occasion about the legal tactics of the Brighton fighter. Williams out pointed Junin in every round , and hurt her with side and round kicks to the body in both the second and third. The decision to then be given to Junin was challenged at the event, and the Brighton Camp have requested for the Sanctioning Body to re-watch the contest where two of the score cards weren’t even scored on a 10 must system. UPDATE: After an appeal was lodged by the Kicks coaches, the fight was reviewed and the result was overturned in favour of Tiff Williams. The result is a win for Tiff Williams.
Sarwar Hamid (17), the young rising star from Brighton Kicks was told to not rely on a points decision and went out with all guns blazing. His Leg Kick Re-Match against the experienced Juri La Monica(29) ended with a second round knock out from Hamid. Hamid came out very strongly in the first round with straight kicks to the body, and then caught La Monica with a good round kick to the head which knocked his opponent down, but for which La Monica did not receive a count. The second round started with both fighters at a distance trading kicks. La Monica then took the centre of the ring and started opening up with big power punches which looked the start of a war, as young Hamid refused to cover up, and answered shot for shot moving forward as he did so. Hamid then caught La Monica with another head kick which sent La Monica to the canvas out cold. Another Knockout Victory for the 17 year old who next fights at Hove Town Hall on Saturday November 24 th, 2007 .
The last bout of the night saw Peter Muffett (Kicks) returning to the ring after a six year absence to fight Simone Delotto from Italy in a Full Contact Kick Boxing Bout. In the first round Peter using his rangy jab to good advantage and knocked his opponent back with strong side kicks. In the second round Muffett tried to load up with the right hand and right leg but the Italian was elusive and kept out of trouble. In the third round Muffett caught his opponent clean with a right hand which staggered him, and as his legs buckled caught him with a rising kick. Muffett was still punching as his opponent was falling into the corner and the referee stepped in just as the final bell went. |

WUMA World Championship Kickboxing - Telford - 16th June 2007
Tiffany Williams(Kicks)had a disappointing night in her bid to lift the vacant WUMA World Professional Flyweight Title against Barbara Delaney(Dublin) at The TIC in Telford.
Delaney was crowned the titleholder after the Kicks corner called the fight to a stop in the fourth round. Williams had nothing but praise for Delaney "I'm disappointed with my performance as I'd trained very hard for this, but I can't take anything away from Delaney. She was the better and more effective fighter that night."
Sarwar Hamid(Kicks) had a split decision win in a three round fight over Warren Betts(Dublin). Hamid started the fight in his usual explosive style and dropped his opponent with a spectacular round kick to the head.
Bett's used his legs more in the second and countered Hamid's Kicks with effective hand combinations, and the third round went to Betts.
INTERNATIONAL THAI/KICKBOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS
ENGLAND VERSUS ITALY
Kicks Champion Tiffany Williams and Kicks upcoming fighter Sarwar Hamid(16) had a successful night at Puma Gym's Evening of International Kickboxing held at Ignite Nightclub, Jarman Park, Hemel Hempstead.
The fighters' opponents were all from Italy; and Williams and Hamid formed part of an 8 man English Team.
Sarwar Hamid had a Leg Kick Bout over 3 x 2 Minute Rounds against Yuri La Monica(Italy). He knocked his opponent through the ropes in the first round, and used his timing and coolness in the ring to his advantage, staying clear of his opponent's powerful right leg and dominating each round with his own powerful kicks. Winner Hamid with a unanimous decision from all three judges.
Tiffany Williams had a Full Contact Bout over 3 x 2 Minute Rounds against Virginia Junin(Italy). In the first round Junin received a standing count and was about to get a second count as the bell saved her. Junin was rocked by Williams's punches and strong round kicks to the body and received a further standing count in the second round. Junin came out strong in the third but was again rocked by Williams's punches. Winner Williams with a unanimous decision from all three judges. At the end of the night England won 5 Bouts with Italy winning 3 Bouts.
RYOBU KAI INTERNATIONAL - WORTHING 19th MAY 2007
Squad Coach leads by example
What a great day the squad had at this competition. With 10 competitors they brought home a very creditable 7 medals. The results are as follows:
GOLD
Jack Donnelly - Kumite
Anthony Andrews - Kumite
Lesley Darrington - Kumite
Boys Team Kumite: Jack Donnelly - Bradley Sweetman - Matthew Knight
SILVER
Danielle Boniface - Kata
BRONZE
Gabriel Shields - Kumite
Bradley Sweetman - Kumite
Other competitors and results:
Georgina Donnelly - Kata
Nicholas Maxfield - Kata
Hazel Stockton - Kata
Matthew Knight - Individual Kumite
Danielle Boniface - Individual Kumite
Bradley Sweetman - Kata
Jack Donnelly - Kata
The competition was well run, and the standard was very high. All of the KMAC competitors performed exceedingly well, and the squad coach Lesley Darrington was pleased with their performance, and looks forward to the next squad session where there is still some work to do.
Lesley herself competed in Kata and Kumite coming 4th in kata and taking the gold in kumite. She certainly inspired the squad members, and the support for her was tremendous.
For some of the squad this was their first major outing and all performed well and gained some valuable experience.
The boys team performed exceedingly well. The final was drawn after 3 bouts KMAC winning one, Tokon winning one and one drawn. After the points were added up the teams were equal. A deciding bout then ensued with Jack Donnelly stepping up to take the responsibility. Jack fought with control and didn't rush. His opponent began to get frustrated and began to concede penalties for contact. With just three seconds left on the clock, both boys went for the winning score. Jack scored with a tremendous gyakuzuki chudan, however his opponent executed a uraken to the head just before Jack scored but due to his frustration he contacted the head and the uraken didn't count. Jack won the bout and the gold was KMAC's.
KMAC were also represented on the refereeing side with Sensei Barry Lovett as Chief Referee, Sensei Tom Wilson Tatami Chief and Sensei Sarah Padget as Kata judge
The message from the squad coach to all competitors was:Well Done job done!
Golden Belt Championship Kickboxing
April 7 th 2007 saw Golden Belt Championship Kickboxing come to Hove Town Hall.
Hove Town Hall is a great fight venue. Spacious, high-ceilinged and centrally located; 21 st Century Promotions had certainly done their job well here and everything ran smoothly on the night: allowing those in the ring to get on with the serious job of fighting.
With local favourite and hugely popular World Champion Tiffany Williams (Kicks, Brighton) facing Bridie Murphy (Dragonfoot Gym, Rotherham), this was set to be a scorcher.
A highly entertaining undercard of local and national fighters kept the excitement building throughout the night. The first fight, and first win of the night went to Sarwar Abdul-Hamid, fighting out of Kicks against Sean Law(Dragonfoot Gym, Rotherham). This was a heated bout, with Abdul Hamid’s array of fast punches and spinning-kicks proving very popular with the crowd at ringside - he is definitely one to keep your eye on.
Tiffany Williams fight exhibited exactly the kind of class that makes her a World Champion. Seeming relatively well-matched in exchanging a dazzling array of techniques with her strong opponent Bridie Murphy, it was Williams’ composure that set her apart in this bout. Cool, calm and collected as she increased the pressure throughout this 5-round rematch to a victory over Murphy, when Fighters spoke to Williams afterwards, she was humble and good-humoured about this second victory.
AMA Southern Karate Championships
31st March 2007
Two competitors from KICKS attended the AMA Championships. Matthew Knight (8) and Jack Donnelly (11) both from the Uckfield club.
Matthew was up first, and fought his way to the semi final where he met a more skilful opponent and lost by a narrow margin. However, he was in the repercharge and after a close fight lost to his opponent albeit seeming to have scored a head kick on the time buzzer which wasn't given.
Jack also got through to the semi final scoring a lot of points. In the semi final he met an opponent with just a little more experience and lost narrowly. Jack was also in the repercharge. His opponent again was more experienced but Jack's coach had been watching him and told Jack what to expect. He wasn't disappointed. Jack managed to overcome his oppenent through a bruising encounter (perhaps the refs should have picked up on the contact) and won third place.
Well done to both boys. It was valuable experience.
CRAWLEY - THAI BOXING - 10th March 2007
On Sunday 10th March Brighton Kicks Fighters Tom Hatton and Sarwar Abdul Hamid trained by Antony Hogbin and Chris Kent fought at a Crawley Thai Boxing Show.
Tom Hatton(65kgs) fought A. Edwards(Keddles) over 3 x 2 minute rounds. In the first round Edwards was throwing effective work from a distance and then coming into the clinch and throwing Hatton. Towards the end of the first round Hatton was caught with a round house kick to the head which resulted in an eight count. The second round continued to see Edwards with the higher and more effective work rate. The Third was a closer round with Hatton finding his rhythm more and able to effectively turn Edwards on the ropes and threw some effective leg kicks. Decision: points win to Edwards.
Sarwar Abdul Hamid(16) had a last minute cancellation against St Albans boy J. Raynor(17). Promoter John Jarvis re-matched him against Crawley Thai Fighter A. Brown(31) in a leg-kick bout over 3 x 1.5 Minute Rounds.
In the first round Hamid came out with a blistering attack of stinging punches and forceful kicks both to the body and head, in a near on continuous onslaught. The second round saw Hamid using his side kick to knock his opponent onto the ropes. Brown had composed himself this round and was throwing more and was using his thai boxing skills to try to hold and frustrate Hamid's work in close. To anything Brown threw Hamid came straight back with a stinging retort. In the third round Hamid was caught by a right to the jaw from Brown, but continued to work effectively, and ended the round as the bell rang with a strong round house kick. Decision : Draw.

JUNIOR BRITISH INTERNATIONAL KARATE OPEN
20/21st January 2007
The following students representing KMAC attended this competition which was held in a changed venue, and therefore suffered in it's organisation. However, the competitors managed very well under the circumstances.
Teams from mnay countries took part, and for most of our competitors this was the first taste of competition at this level.
KMAC entered two students in the kata section Nathan Jay from KICKS Eastbourne and Danielle Boniface from KICKS Peacehaven.
Nathan performed an unfamiliar kata Bassai Dai, one which he has been working on for a few months and was unfortunate to go out in the first round. Danielle, performing in a competition which is renowned for its excellence performed very well and again was unfortunate to go out in the first round. The KMAC coaches were very pleased with them.
In the kumite, the 10/11 year old section included Bradley Sweetmen KICKS Peacehaven, Nathan Jay KICKS Eastbourne, Jack Donnelly KICKS Uckfield and Shem Katz KICKS Eastbourne.
These boys were entered in the team kumite, and came up against another club in KMAC (EKK) and were unfortunate to lose. A little more experience will see these boys gaining medals very soon.
In the individual events, Nathan was unable to compete due to being ill, Shem was eliminated in the second round, and Jack and Bradley both lost in the first round. This said, the coaches were very pleased with their performances against very experienced opposition. Well done guys, keep training and you will soon be there.
On the Sunday, Lee Silsby KICKS Peacehaven, Ashlee Ford and Robbie Jeffries both of KICKS Eastbourne, competed in the kumite. All three were eliminated in the first round, but again, against very experienced opposition they did well.
The experience of this competition will only give these young people more confidence in their abilities. The squad, having taken a few knockbacks over the past few months, is working well, and beginning to act as a unit. This is down to the students, the support of the parents and the unfailing dedication of the squad coaches. Well done to all.
