TIFF WILLIAMS' DEFENCE OF WKU PRO-AM BRITISH BANTAM WEIGHT TITLE
On Sunday December 4 th Tiffany Williams defended her WKU Pro-Am British Bantam Weight Title at Bournemouth’s Absolute Adrenaline Show. This was against Bridie Murphy (Rotherham) and was over 5 x 2 Minute Rounds. Much has been made of this fight as it had been scheduled to take place in Hove early this year but had been cancelled due to illness.
Murphy regarded as an aggressive and pro-active fighter came out fast at the beginning of the bout landing a kick to the face and a strong combination of hands. This galvanised Williams into action, known for sometimes being something of a slow starter, and Williams responded with a series of strong side kicks to the body and round kicks to the head.
Williams outkicked Murphy round for round, incorporating double and treble kicks to keep the fighter at a distance. In the third round Murphy changed stance but got caught by a sweep and combination of hands, and by the end of this round seemed visibly worn down by the constant barrage of side and round kicks both to the body and head. Murphy did try to retaliate and come back at Williams, but William’s quick footwork meant a lot of Murphy’s work missed and left her unbalanced and open for further punishment. In close range much of William’s handwork was frustrated by Murphy holding, but on occasion her trademark left hook was seen to hit its target and good exchanges of hands were seen by both fighters in the fourth round.
Williams continued to keep Murphy at range throughout the fight through the use of her legs and in the fifth round did knock Murphy off balance and down with a double side kick to the body. The fifth round was fought to the final bell but Williams won on a unanimous decision and returned to Brighton delighted by a successful year. Williams will be back training in 2006 for a defence of her BIKMA World Flyweight Title.
