What is Kickboxing
Kickboxing originated in the mid-seventies in America under the guidance of the PKA (Professional Karate Association). It was initiated as a result of the frustration felt by many martial artists with the Karate tournament circuit.
Kickboxing came to the United Kingdom in the late 1970s and has established itself as a demanding and exciting sport. It is an eclectic martial art that has combined the hand techniques of the boxer along with the kicks of many different martial arts from the orient.
Initially known as Full Contact Karate with most of the original champions coming from a Karate background;
Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, Joe Lewes, Benny "The Jet" Ugidez, and our own undefeated British Champion Chris Kent, it increasingly came to be known as Kickboxing.
This was due to the criticism from many traditionalists that the fighting seen in the ring was a mixture of styles and disciplines that could not and should not be referred to as Karate.
KICKS has been at the forefront of British Kickboxing for 20 years. Chris Kent, the founder of Kicks, set the first club up in 1982, and was the first British PKA Champion retiring undefeated after three years of competition and rated 6 th in the world at this time.
In 2000 Chris Kent was awarded his 6 th Degree by the ISKA for his participation, teaching and promotion of Kickboxing in the UK and Europe. His clubs have gone from strength to strength and his fighters have toured world wide and been televised on Sky and Eurosport. He has an impressive stable of teachers and fighters; including former Super Welter Weight Intercontinental Champion Tom Montgomery, former Welter Weight World Champion Nick Clark , former Super Welter Weight ISKA World Champion Jim Caldecourt and Tiffany Williams as current Amateur World Flyweight Champion.
Kicks was one of the first clubs to develop a grading syllabus and we offer a variety of classes to accommodate those from Beginners to Black Belt . Our classes are taught in a safe and structured way and meet the needs of both those who want to compete and those who want to train in order to improve their strength, suppleness and general levels of fitness.
In addition to our general classes we are also able to offer Women's Only Classes and lessons on a one to one basis.
